چکیده

In this paper an innovative model that describes the SAR imaging process of natural scenes is presented. It is completely fractal-based. In the hypothesis of small slope regime of the surface, we evaluate here, in closed form, the Power Spectrum Density of the SAR image. The proposed model effectively accounts for the effect of finite sensor resolutions and for the peculiarity of SAR acquisition geometry. Inverting this complete direct model it is possible to retrieve the fractal dimension of the observed surface. Significant experimental results, that validate the theoretical conclusions, are also shown.

A New Perspective in Shape from Shading from Sar Images

In this paper we propose a new technique for Shape from Shading (SfS) from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images based on fractals. In particular, the present paper shows that, introducing proper models both for surface and scattering mechanisms, it is possible to estimate with sufficient accuracy the underlying topography also with a very simple and low computational complexity inversion techn...

Discrimination of Geological Top-Formations by their Morphology through SAR Images and via Fractal Geometry implementation in IEM Backscattering Model(Case Study: Zagros Thrust Belt)

Morphological discrimination of geological top-formations is the supplemental procedure of geological mapping; so in situ measurements to register geomorphological data are unavoidable; though due to the impassable and fault cliffs field operations to visit all areas within a geological map is almost impossible. Microwave or radar remote sensing, via synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is cap...

A Multifractal Approach for Classification of Sar Image

Fractal dimension has been found not suitable to be used solely in classifying natural earth terrain. This is due to the fact that surfaces with different texture may portray similar fractal dimensions. Evertsz and Mandelbrot [Evertsz, et. al. 1992] suggested that multifractal dimension may be a more appropriate parameter than fractal dimension in describing geometrical properties of a fractal ...

SAR raw signal simulation of actual ground sites described in terms of sparse input data

This paper deals with the simulation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) raw signal of actual ground sites described in terms of sparse input data. Since in most cases the input data reference system does not match SAR requirements, it is necessary to adopt appropriate interpolation schemes. We focus our attention on elevation input data, noting that natural surfaces exhibit fractal properties. F...

Quantitative roughness characterization of geological surfaces and implications for radar signature analysis

Stochastic surface models are useful for analyzing in situ roughness profiles and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of geological terrain. In this paper, two different surface models are discussed: surfaces with a stationary random roughness (conventional model) and surfaces with a power-law roughness spectrum (fractal model). In the former case, it must be considered that for short profile...
